Fire investigation and consulting services are offered by Midstates Investigations and Technical Services, Inc. (MITS)William (Bill) Lundy is the principal investigator for Midstates Investigations and Technical Services, Inc. Lundy spent 10 years in law enforcement with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), a part of which time he spent at the Wisconsin Crime Laboratory Bureau where he was trained by the FBI National Academy in Crime Scene Investigation. He worked in the DCI Arson Bureau as a Deputy State Fire Marshal and became one of Wisconsin's first IAAI-Certified Fire Investigators. He served as a president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He spent 20 years managing the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of a large regional insurance company turning it into what became recognized as the Standard of the Industry in fire and fraud investigation.Lundy was a key founder the International Association of SIU's, (IASIU) a world wide organization of insurance fraud investigators. He assisted and consulted with many insurers on how to organize and manage their SIU's as well as leading many training sessions. In his over 40 years of fire investigation and management of fire and fraud investigation, Lundy has personally investigated and/or supervised the investigation of thousands of fires. He has been a court qualified expert witness in fire investigation and origin and cause determination. Lundy wrote a series of text books on fire and fraud investigation and was the principal author of the National Insurance Crime Bureau's (NICB) handbook on vehicle fire investigation. Another book written by Lundy is now being used by the American Educational Institute as one of their text books for claim representatives, claims legal and SIU investigators. A principal mission of MITS, Inc. is the assessment of fire claim files to determine if the origin and cause investigation will ever make it through court. In Lundy's work experience, he has seen the mistakes made by investigators in both private and public service in Origin and Cause determinations. Many companies pay claims that they should not pay or they allow themselves to be subrogated for fires that are not their responsibility. Lundy has also seen companies deny claims that they actually owed and he has worked on defense files for people accused of crimes they did not commit. MITS, Inc. will consult with insurers to help them in litigation of fire claims. MITS, Inc. is cognizant of NFPA 921 and how it affects insurance company decisions on fire claims. MITS stands ready to review and consult on Insurance Company fire files to see where the weak spots exist and how to either make them stronger or determine if payment is due so as to keep the company out of the trouble of denying legitimate claims. We stand ready to assist companies to resist unwarranted subrogation claims and to assist claimants who may be denied legitimate benefits under their policies. Mistakes happen in both directions. An additional service provided by MITS is the analysis of SIU operations and consulting with insurers on how to improve their SIU operations.
